BACKING UP YOUR COMPUTER TO A USB DEVICE
WHY SHOULD YOU BACKUP? • DATA CAN BE LOST DUE TO • POWER SURGES • MANUFACTURING DEFECTS • HURRICANES/LIGHTENING STRIKES
What is a USB Device • A USB flash drive (also known as a USB memory key or a thumb drive) - Is a small, portable device that connects to the USB port on the computer. It is used to store data and to easily transfer data from one computer to another computer. • An external hard disk -A device that can be attached to the computer via a USB port
What files should you back up? BACKUP UP THE FOLLOWING FILES: • DESKTOP – Contains your icons, shortcuts, and files • MY DOCUMENTS – All your created files are usually stored here • FAVORITES – Bookmarked locations from your browser • MAILBOX – Outlook Personal Folders • COOKIES – Information saved by websites
Step 1: Double-click the My Computer icon located on your desktop Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 4: Open the folder containing your personal files • This folder has the same name as your login to your computer • last name, first initial(s) • example: smithm
Step 5: Select Multiple Files • Press and hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard and click on the following folders: • Cookies • Desktop • Favorites • Mailbox • My Documents
Step 6: Copy the Files • Release the Ctrl key. • Point to one of the selected folders and rightclick on it. • Scroll down to Copy and left click on it to select it.
Step 7: Connect to your USB device • Close all Windows • Connect your USB device • IF you get a menu prompt, select Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer
Step 8: Add the Files to your USB device • In the USB Window, right click and select Paste
Step 9: Backup is Complete • When the Copy is complete, right click and select the Icon Safely Remove Hardwarethat is at the bottom right of your screen
Step 10: Stop the USB Device • In the Safely Remove Hardwarewindow, click on the correct device and click Stop.
Step 11: Remove USB Device • In the Stop a Hardware Devicewindow, click OK. • You may now unplug your USB device.
