  2. What is Whaling? • It is when you hunt whale’s for the oil and meat • The oil was used to fuel lamps b4 electricity • They are also hunted for their baleen which is whale bone.

  3. History - The Korean’s have been hunting whales since 5000 BC. • Norwegian’s began whaling about 4,000 years ago. • People from the North American coast and the Artic have a long tradition of whaling. • Whaling was usually done from canoes or boats using harpoons

  4. Who still whales? • There are still countries today that continue whaling. Those countries include… • Japan • Norway • Iceland

  5. Restrictions & Regulations • In 1932 through 1933 there were attempts made to stop and restrict whale hunting. • The International Whaling Commission (IWC) • formed in Washington, D.C., by 17 different nations. • Helps to limit the number of whales that could be hunted. • Other groups such as GreenPeace became very involved in the attempts to stop whaling.

  8. Weapons & ships • The harpoon was invented by a norwegian named Sven Foyn. It was used because it contains an explosive head which would kill a whale instantly • Whale hunter’s also used factory ships because it was safe and made it easier to catch larger whales. • Factory ship - a whaling ship equipped to process whale products at sea.
