Background LaoInfo project • Project implemented as part of National Human Development Report project since 2004 • LaoInfo: • MDG indicators, • Census 1995 and 2005, • Lao Reproductive Health Survey 2000 and 2005, and • MICS3 • + Social Economic Indicators • +Gender Statistics • Twice adaptations • LaoInfo V4.1 in 2005 • LaoInfo V5.0 in 2009
Institutional framework • MoU signed since 2004. • LaoInfo as tool for data dissemination in the strategies for the Development of the National Statistical System 2020. • LaoInfo Network established among five key line ministries and five provinces, which are being expanded to eight ministries and twelve provinces. • Key implementing partner – DoS. • Main support partners – UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNDP.
Capacity building • Training is mainly organized by DoS • Nearly 200 staff from line ministries and provinces have been trained • Two line ministries – MoE and MAF able to organize their own training
MDG1: Eradicate Poverty and HungerTarget1a: Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day Poverty declined steadily and the country is on course to achieve MDG1
MDG2: Achieve Universal Primary EducationTarget 2a: Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling NER in primary school (%) • In overall, Lao PDR is on track in achieving MDGs 2 by 2015 • 11 more provinces out of 17 need to accelerate their efforts for enrolling children in primary school. • More than 43 thousand of children aged 6-10 years are yet enrolled in primary education annually. Good practices • National ownership • High commitment from technical staff in DoS, line ministries, and provincial authorities • Higher level of involvement leads to better implementation • Continuous support from partners
Challenges • Limited HR/staff • Language • Limited IT equipment • Not yet widely used for evidence base • Training conducted only at technical level • More high level awareness is needed
