Yesterday is torn in shreds. Lightning’s thousand sulfur eyes Rip apart the breathing beds. Doom creeps in on rubber treads. Countless overwrought housewives, Minds unraveling like threads, Try lipstick shades to tranquilize Fear of age and general dreads. Sit tight, be perfect, swat the spies, Don’t take faucets for fountain heads. Drink tasty antidotes. Otherwise You and the werewolf: newlyweds.
Poetic Analysis Literal meaning Being perfect Lightning is bright Fear Be perfect, make it otherwise. Figurative meaning I believe that this poem is possibly about a newlywed couple and the husband abuses her. She tries to be beautiful and perfect, giving off hints not to be fooled.
Explaining figurative meaning • “ Be perfect make it otherwise” meaning be perfect and hide that you aren’t. “Countless overwrought housewives” Meaning that she isn’t the only woman going through this. “Try lipstick shades to tranquilize” She’s trying to hide her flaws and make herself beautiful. “Sit tight, be perfect, swat the spies” Don’t let anyone know and be perfect no matter what. “You and the werewolf: newlyweds” The husbands a monster and you’re stuck together.” Fear of age and general dreads” she’s afraid of getting old and him being ashamed and beating her more. I think the authors purpose was to possibly reveal a secret without actually giving it away. Maybe she was abused and is trying to come forward with it.
