Analysis on the Technological Advancement and Output Growth of Bangus Industry in Dagupan City, Pangasinan STS Anna Jinelle V. Bacani Josefina Guiyab
Abstract: The study seek to analyze the relationship between the output growth of bangus industry and technological advancement from the year 2002-2012. the study also describes the trends of the output growth of bangus production in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. In the span of 10 years, form 2002-2012, the study shows that output growth of bangus industry in Dagupan City exhibited an irregular trend and it has been observed that the other determinants may affects the output growth of bangus industry such as natural disasters and government subsidies.
Background of the Study: The aquaculture. Is one of the most important segments of the fishing industry in the country. It is continuously gaining attention as a potential source of production increase. Fish is one of our most important natural resources and it is the principal source of animal protein food of 90 millions Filipinos. Rice and fish consists the chief diet of millions of Filipinos. The fishing industry as a whole is considered as one of the basic factors in maintaining our economic and social stability throughout the year and as an independent nation. (BOF, 1956) Most iconic of Dagupan is its title as the Bangus capital of the world besides being among the top producers of milkfish (bangus) in Pangasinan. It was further made known all over the world in 2003 when the city became a record holder of the world’s longest barbeque as certified by the Guinness World Records.
Statement of the Problem: The study answered the question: what kinds of technological advancement are used in Bangus Industry over the period time from year 2002-2012? And how do these technological advancements contribute to the output growth of the Bangus Industry? And also addressed the following specific questions: • What are the technologies used to maintain the sustainability of bangus production in Dagupan city? • What are the technologies used in pond preparation to maintain the sustainability of bangus industry ibDagupan City? • What are the technologies used to harvest bangus to maintain the sustainability of bangus industry in Dagupan city? • What are the post-harvest technologies used to maintain the sustainability of bangus industry in Dagupan city? 2. How much is the costs of these technologies acquire by the fishing industry? 3. How much does the output growth of Bangus industry increase over a period of time from year 2001-2012?
Objectives: The main aim of this study is to determine the technological advancement of Bangus industry over a period of the year 2002-2012. • To assess this technological advancement in the industry are acceptable in maintaining the production of bangus sufficient. • To know whether this technological advancement greatly affects the output growth of bangus industry in Dagupan city. • To compare the output growth of bangus industry is relatively increasing over the period of time from the year 2002-2012 with help of these new technologies.
Significance of the Study: The accomplishment of this research study would mainly give additional information to the owners and investors in boosting the productivity of their bangus business. Likewise, this would also serve as a gateway for LGUs in improving the quality of bangus industry in Dagupancit, if we were remain as the Bangus capital of the world. Provided with these new data and information acquired in the research, it will helps government agencies, research communities and private sectors further exerts concerted efforts towards the technological advancement for the growth and strengthening the bangus industry.
Importance of technological advancement • the technology had the potential to give rise to negative consequences for those unable to access it, by: (1) creating polarization among fishermen: (2) making traditional knowledge, process and skills redundant leading to deskilling: (3) increasing capital investments and concentrating ownership and thus, decision-making processes into fewer hands; (4) increasing indebtness; (5) leading to excessive energy intensity and increasing the dependence on fossil fuel; (6) making the livelihood of fisherwomen precarious; and (7) increasing exploitation levels to unsustainable levels. (George, 2011: 15).
Technological advancement • Technological change consist of discovering new methods or practices in producing old products, developing alternatives products and introducing techniques of marketing, organization, and management.
According to Archibugi (1988;254) , we can measure improvement in technology using this four category • “the five types of innovation on how we will measure technological change are (1) the introduction of a new good – that is the one with which consumers are not yet familiar or of a new quality of good. (2) the introduction of new method of production (3) the opening of a new market (4) the conquest of a new source of supply or raw materials or half manufactured goods”
Technologies produced for Bangus Production in Dagupan City (2002 to 2012)
Total cost of producing technologies in all Stages of Bangus production in Dagupan City in percentage (2002 to 2012)
Total labor hours to master all technologies used in all stages of Bangus production in Dagupan City: 2002-2012 (In percentage)
Total Cost of Repair for all technologies sedin all stages of Bangus Production in Dagupan City: 2002 -2012 (In percentage)
Conclusion: • The production of bangus by function with the technological advance in terms of production is evidently increasing over time. • Some factors like natural disasters and city’s economic instability affect production of bangus. It shows that on the 2009, the production of bangus is greatly decline due to disaster brought by the typhoon Pepeng in Dagupan city. • Man power is the most essential factor that contributes to the production of bangus in Dagupan city. • The regression results shows that total cost of materials or new technologies introduce in the bangus industry has a negative impact on the profit but for the production per se it increase the production of bangus but the total labor hours to master the material and cost of repair shows an insignificant in explaining the production of bangus. therefore, we can conclude that technological advancement truly contribute on the production of bangus but for some cases techniques and natural disasters are contributory factors to the production of bangus.
