Cubism

1. Cubism • Cubism was inventedby Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque within the first decade of the twentieth century, Nearly 100 years ago. • It revolutionized the way we look at paintings and artwork and it influenced generations of artists. • The term Cubism came from the artist Henri Matisse who saw the Cubist artwork and likened the geometrical shapes in the paintings to small cubes.

2. Realistic Still Life? • Sometimes in realistic paintings Artists will try to give the impression of a whole and solid object or person. However, they can never show us all the sides of the objects they are painting at the same time. 1.Traditional still life arrangement of bottles, fruit and jars.

3. What is Cubism? • Instead of trying to show a realistic 3 dimensional object in a painting, Cubism flattened the objects and attempted to show all sides of them at once. • So, if you imagine looking at an object and slowly walking around it, looking at it from all angles, Cubism tried to show this 3 dimensional view all at the same time on a flat, 2 dimensional surface. 2 &3. 9. Objectives of the lesson: To understand the basics of Cubism and to learn the skills necessary to enable you to shade shapes and objectsgoing from dark to light. What you are going to do: Using a ruler, you are going to divide the next clean page in your sketchbook into 4 sections. You will label these ‘Up’, ‘Down’, ‘To the left’ and ‘To the right’. The next page in your book you will divide into 2 sections and the bottom half you will divide into 2 again. This will leave 3 unequal sections in your book. You are going to begin by practicing shading in the first 4 sections,Shading upwards, shading down, shading to the right and shading to the left.
