Moles & Stoichiometry
Formulas indicate the type and number of element in the compound
Writing Formulas NaCl Sodium Chloride - Beryllium Oxide - BeO
Magnesium Fluoride - MgF2 Lithium Sulfide - Li2S
Rules: 1. Write each symbol 2. Assign oxidation numbers 3. Balance oxidation numbers
Metals & Non-metals Naming CaO - Calcium Oxide KBr - Potassium Bromide Li2S - Lithium Sulfide
Cs3P - Cesium Phosphide
Rules: 1. Name metal 2. Name non-metal, change ending to -ide
Non-metals & Non-metals Naming Just have to use prefixes for the number of each element represented.
Prefix- 1 - Mono- 2 - Di- 3 - Tri- 4 - Tetra- 5 - Penta-
N2O2- Dinitrogen dioxide CO- Carbon monoxide SiCl4- Silicon tetrachloride Pentarsenic trichloride As5Cl3-
Rule: • Don’t use “Mono-” for the first element
Polyatomic Ions - Found on your charts - Treat as if they are one.
Naming with Polyatomic Ions Na2CO3- Sodium carbonate Magnesium hypochlorite Mg(ClO)2 -
Sr(NO2)2 - Strontium nitrite KSCN - Potassium thiocyanate NH4Cl - Ammonium chloride
Rule: 1. Name 1st element or polyatomic ion 2. Name 2nd element or polyatomic ion
Caution: If second part is an element change ending to -ide
Formula Writing Silver permanganate - Ag(MnO4) Aluminum chlorate - Al(ClO3)3
Stock System - Used when the first element has more than one oxidation number.
Naming with Stock System MnO2 - Manganese (IV) oxide AuCl3 - Gold (III) chloride
Pb(Cr2O7)2 - Lead (IV) dichromate Hg(CH3COO) - Mercury (I) acetate
Writing Formulas NiBr3 Nickel (III) bromide - Germanium (II) hypochlorite - Ge(ClO)2
