UNEP Shelf Programme One Stop Data Shop Presentation International Data Exchange Workshop Kiel, Germany, May 9-11, 2007 Yannick Beaudoin, Øystein Halvorsen, Tina Schoolmeester
Background UNCLOS Article 76-outer limits of the continental shelf DEADLINE (for most States) MAY 2009 GRID-Arendal/UNEP Shelf Programme (Norway): • focus on developing states and SIDS • training and capacity building (long term) • supported by Norwegian government • DATA…
One Stop Data Shop (OSDS) The primary functions of the OSDS is to: • Provide requesting States with a “data package” for their area of interest in a format suitable for their own software platform. • Provide an online survey analysis tool to developing States and small island developing States (SIDS) that allows for a complete overview of available marine geoscientific research data. • Provide technical support including data formatting, manipulation and processing (e.g. analog seismic digitizing). • Provide continual data support as a State progresses in it’s submission process.

OSDS: Area Generator Generate a ”project” anywhere in the world from master data base in chosen projection and datum in a few minutes. The ”project” can be converted by the One Stop Data Shop’s filters to the desired format for import into chosen tool. Data completeness of the ”project” will depend on the One Stop Data Shop’s ability to get access to and process relevant data.

Simplified Work Flow • Get hold of Metadata • Include easily available digital data at same time as collecting Metadata • Collect non-digital and other less available data; scan and georeferencing process • Use filters/conversion programs to import, process and output datasets in various formats • Ensure all software modules access the same primary database • Establish security and access control
OSDS: Solidifying Partnerships • Short term need for developing States and SIDS to assess data availability in their areas of interest • DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING (for most developing States): MAY 2009 • UNEP Shelf Programme mandated to facilitate a State’s access to all available marine geoscientific research data PARTNERSHIPS WITH DATA HOLDERS.
UNEP Shelf Programme The Shelf Programme can: • Facilitate direct, high level bilateral relationships with States • Be an entry point to the UNEP and UN network • Can be a focal point for collaboration between data holders Future outlook: ocean environmental and natural resource management capacity building Collaboration NOT duplication
How to Access the One Stop Data Shop • UNEP Shelf Programme web page ( http://www.continentalshelf.org/ ) to access metadata or • Contact us directly http://www.continentalshelf.org - info@continentalshelf.org(Implemented) • Define area of interest, format and means of data transfer • We will collect and generate data according to specs (if possible) and transfer data collection to user (implemented)
