Why did it start? • The Reason why the battle of Coral Sea started is because the Japanese were into capturing land. • They were into capturing Port Moresby, and New Guinea. • The invasion was actually planed to happen in March but the appearance of carriers by the united states in the south-west Pacific had postponed it until May.
Who Fought? • The united States fought the battle of Coral Sea against Japan • Attack was Completely by planes • Japanese Won because we were not prepared for the attack • Japanese knew exactly what they were going to do and they didn’t hesitate to do it.
Japanese plan • First the Japanese were going to try to take over Coral sea. • This would give them full access to Northern Australia where they could observe allied buildup. • Next, they were going to take over New Guinea and build there base because of the wide open area.
Fighting Back • The U.S tried to fight back with destroyers and submarines. • It was successful at first until the Japanese started to sink the destroyers.
First to Happen • In Every Battle that was ever fought that 2 planes have crashed into each other they saw one another. • In the Battle of Coral Sea was different. • this was the first battle ever that 2 planes had clashed into one another without the enemies seeing each other.
The Shokaku and the Zuikaku Japanese carriers played a major part in the Battle of Coral Sea. • Before the battle of Coral Sea Japan had lost 21 ships but none of them were bigger than a Destroyer.
Yorktown • During the battle Yorktown had sent 24 dive bombers 9 torpedo planes and 6 fighting planes • All of these were under command of Joe Taylor. • Dive bombers would arrive first at the scene.
Shockaku • The Japanese Carrier Shockaku was damaged in the war by 3 bomber planes that Yorktown had sent over. • How many do you think were killed or injured on the carrier? • 108 men were killed and 40 were injured by the bombing of the carrier • All of them planes Where later lost when the Japanese firing brought everything under control.
Just Attack • The Commander of the U.S told the Aircrafts to just fire at any enemy target that they saw. • Japanese started to Attack American Carriers since they were attacking the Japanese ones.
