1. Writing the Specialty Area Report
2. Accreditation 2007 November 3-7, 2007 is the continuing accreditation visit for professional education programs leading to state licensure at Western Carolina University
Two teams will visit
NCATE (about 6 team members)
DPI (approx. 20-25 members)
3. Self-Study Reports The College of Education and Allied Professions will submit one report to NCATE called the Institutional Report or IR
Specialty Area Reports (SARs) will be submitted to DPI for every license area at each level.
4. Specialty Area Reports The SAR is required for each license area at each level.
For example, elementary education might have one report that addresses the initial level and graduate or advanced level or they could submit separate reports.
5. SAR The SAR addresses each of the DPI Program Approval Standards for the licensure area at each level.

7. Addressing the Standards Under Program Approval Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions, undergraduate programs must address four sets of standards:
Core
Diversity
Technology
Specialty Area Standards

9. Begin Now Work on Specialty Area Standards
Ask the question, “Where do our candidates demonstrate proficiency of the Specialty Area Standards for my area?”
10. What Does “Proficiency” Mean? Evidence of proficiency can include:
Tests (external – Praxis, internal – course)
Graded assignments
Graded performances
Evaluated products (portfolios, reflections, observations, etc.)
11. What Does “Proficiency” Mean? Evidence of proficiency should not include
Course grades (can help; but cannot stand alone)
Ungraded or unevaluated assignments, performances, or products
12. What Does “Proficiency” Mean? Evidence of proficiency should be quantifiable and aggregated data over time.
Evidence of proficiency should include the assessment instrument or assessment rubric.
