Career Development Programme for Band 5 Staff Nurses Based on NIPEC’S “Development Framework 2006” Patient’s receive high quality, person centred care from competent and confident staff.
Project Aims: To develop a document and programme that was: Relevant to current work environments Flexible for teams in a variety of areas Structured, to allow development of individual learning needs Supportive to individuals and teams
Getting to the Starting Point • Regional programme in existence, starter for 10! • Developed to meet the needs of surgery team • Support from Senior Managers & Ward Sisters • Focus on specific areas identified through incidents and complaints
The Journey Commences • Newly appointed staff to the directorate • Career development - Blue file • Introductory meeting with Clinical Coordinators • Invitation to meet the Surgery Directorate Senior Management Nursing Team
The Journey Continues • Progress through Blue file • Update meetings with Clinical Coordinator • Training needs identified • Evidence sheets and Reflection sheets
Bumps on the Road • Clinical Coordinators not informed of new staff commencing post • Increasing numbers on programme • Providing and updating Blue file • Coordinating update meetings
A New Path and future trips • Redeployed staff • Amended to suit Cancer services team and further roll out into other directorates • Ensuring terminology up to date • Developing Blue files for Band 6 and 7 using guidance from NIPEC Learning & Development framework (March 2012)
Destination • Patient’s receive high quality, person centred care from competent and confident staff. • Complaints reduced by 50% April 2010 to date • “I am very happy in my work” • “the nurses are efficient, helpful and very professional” • “Staff were very kind and caring and made me feel welcome and safe”
