Social Studies - Science • Social Studies will cover from the Explorers to the Formation of Government. • Ameritowne is in December this year. We will have a sign up for this at conferences. • Science – we will study the Universe, Human Body, and Electricity/ Magnetism. We are also hoping to do another dissection. “New Me” program in the spring.
Math • 5th grade uses the Everyday Math curriculum. • Materials are in each classroom for you to look through. • Expect math homework nightly!
Discipline *We will be working on a points system. * Each child will be given a specific amount of points to start each trimester with. * We will start the 1st trimester with 75 points. * A student will need a total of 40 points at the end of the trimester to be able to join the party.
Discipline Cont. * A student can lose points in numerous ways… No homework -1 point Discipline issue -1 points Planner not signed -1point *You may lose more than one point per issue per day. *Teachers will keep track of students total points in our grade books. We will have a chart on the board for students to reference to see how many points were lost during the week. *If a student loses more than 5 points in one week they will spend the following Monday inside during lunch recess. *Daily points will be kept track of by the student. For example… A student doesn’t have their planner signed. They will need to put their name on the board. That same student is being disruptive in class, they will then add a check to their name. At the end of the day the teacher will see that students name on the board with one check and deduct two points.
*Snacks • We are allowing kids to bring a healthy snack to eat At the beginning of math. *Planner A planner will go home every night to be signed by a parent. This is a wonderful way for us to communicate.
RULES CONCERNING WORK COMPLETION • Make-up work – The student will be given full grade credit for late work caused by and excused absence, provided it is handed in on the due date specified on the work. IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO INQUIRE ABOUT MISSING WORK AND TO HAND THEM IN WITHIN THE GIVEN TIME. • WHAT ABOUT THIS?? • Late-work – Late assignments will be marked down. If late work becomes a problem students may lose lunch recess to complete assignments or be given a zero for a responsibilty grade. However, this policy could change as the year goes on and we will keep you posted.
Helping your child be SUCCESSFUL • ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO: • Organize materials for class • Finish all work on time • Participate in class discussions • Use neat, legible handwriting • Proof-read work and avoid careless errors • Use class time wisely • Make up work promptly when absent • Study regularly at home • Listen and be attentive in class • Take papers and other assignments home to share
Reminder • Don’t forget before you leave to sign up for… • Conferences Thank you!
Working together we know we will have a very successful year!
