  1. Renewable Energy Sources

  2. Solar Energy Solar energy is the source, directly or indirectly of most other renewable energy sources. (Wind, Biomass, and Water)

  3. Solar Power in the Home

  4. Solar Power in Outer Space

  5. Solar Power Plants • Plants use giant mirrors (rows of mirrors) • Mirrors focus the sun’s rays to heat a tank of water • Boiling water creates steam used to generate electricity

  6. Solar Cells • Solar energy can be converted directly into electricity • Has a negative and positive terminal like a battery • Light hits the cell and an electric current is produced • Solar cells can power calculators, lights, and small devices like a telephone.

  7. Passive Solar Heating • Converts sunlight into thermal energy, which is then distributed without using pumps or fans.

  8. Active Solar Heating • Captures sun’s energy and then uses pumps and fans to distribute the heat throughout a building.

  9. Advantages 1. Free 2. Creates no pollution. 3. Renewable

  10. Disadvantages 1. Limited to areas that have little to no cloud cover. • Requires a huge amount of land resources because the solar cells can only convert 10% of the solar radiation into electricity. • Doesn’t work at night so energy must be stored in batteries.
