Digestive System System Function: To break down the food we eat into smaller parts, so that our body can use them to provide energy as well as to build and nourish cells in our body. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7xKYNz9AS0 Mouth Gullet /Esophagus Small intestine Large intestine Stomach Anus Organs The mucosa, the submucosa , lymphoid tissue, muscle tissue and the muscularisexterna tissues, etc… loose connective tissue, diffuse lymphatic tissue, etc… Epithelium Tissues Enetrocytes, Goblet cells, Paneth cells, enteroendocrine cells, intermediate cells, etc… Cells
More about the digestive system Organs: Mouth – Chews and breaks down the food into smaller pieces, uses digestive juices to help in digestion. Gullet – Allows food to pass through from the mouth to the stomach. Stomach – Stores and helps to break down food. Food which enters the stomach is further broken apart and thoroughly mixed with gastric acid, pepsin and other digestive enzymes to break down proteins. Small intestine – Mixed with other digestive juices to break down food into even smaller particles. Large intestine -Within it, digestion is retained long enough to allow fermentation due to the action of bacteria, which breaks down some of the substances which remain after processing in the small intestine; some of the breakdown products are absorbed. Anus –Allows waste product to be passed out through the anus after being stored at the rectum.
More about the digestive system Tissues: Connective tissues-A form of fibrous tissue which connects other tissues together to form an organ. Diffuse lymphatic tissue-Represents a specialization within the connective tissue compartment. Mucosa tissue – A moist tissue that lines some organs and body cavities throughout the body, including your nose, mouth, lungs, and digestive tract. Epithelium – A tissue composed of cells that line the cavities and surfaces of structures throughout the body.
More about the digestive system Cells: Enetrocytes – Also known as intestinal absorptive cellswhich are found in the small intestines and colon(large intestine). Goblet cells - Sole function is to secrete mucin, which dissolves in water to form mucus. Panethcells - They contain zinc and lysozyme, however, their exact function is unknown but due to the presence of lysozyme it is likely that they contribute to host defense Enteroendocrinecells - Rare and slow growing carcinoid tumors develop from these cells.
