What is it? • Persuasive writing aims to convince the reader of a debatable argument. Intended to convince, argue or influence the reader. • Persuasive writing is seen everyday in speeches, commercials, and essays. It is important to be familiar with persuasive writing because it is a useful way of conveying an opinion in a convincing way.
How do I Know if I’m being persuaded To be able to identify persuasive writing you must decide if the writer is: • Expressing an opinion. • Trying to convince you of his or her opinion. • Trying to convince you to “do” something.
Persuasive Thesis • In order to be an effective persuasive writer, you must be able to introduce your big argument with a thesis. • Thesis: It’s the one sentence that tells the reader what the whole paper is about.
