  2. Chronology of Events • 2005 – The State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities decided to begin closing the Gulf Coast Center facility located in Fort Myers. Final closing scheduled for June 30, 2010. • August 2009- FGCU received statutorily defined letter from the Department of Environmental Protection (who manages state lands) inquiring if FGCU or other government agencies or municipalities wished to have the Gulf Coast Center transferred to them. • FGCU and Lee County responded an interest. • September 2009- FGCU received correspondence that the State was interested in amending the FGCU land lease to include the Gulf Coast Center. • January 19, 2010 - After careful review of the Center, FGCU brought the offer before the University Board of Trustees who authorized the transfer.

  3. Property Location Overview • Approximately 30 miles from FGCU. • Buckingham is a Rural Community. • Access is via a two lane road.

  5. Quick Facts • Land previously used by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. • 500 acres • 300 already developed • 200 acres adjacent to Lee County’s 20/20 land for preservation. • 60 structures on site • Accommodations for up to 300 people

  6. Site Structures • 60 structures built in the 1950s and ‘60s including: • Gymnasium • Kitchens • Recreation fields • Picnic areas • Swimming pool • Small dormitories • All structures up to code. Facilities in excellent shape.

Planned Site Usages • Student Life Retreat Center for university • Multi partnership opportunities with other government entities • Emergency Planning and Operations as all buildings have back-up generators • Student/County recreation opportunities • Running Club • Has a small baseball field • Research opportunities • Continuing education • Limited academic opportunities • Golf management driving range

  8. Associated Costs • Land cost is free. Initial estimated value is $8 million. • Estimated to cost $1.8 million per year for safety, security, energy usage, maintenance and upkeep. • Strategy is to secure plant, maintenance and operating dollars in the 2011 legislative session. • Additionally, FGCU will seek revenue generating activities • Sublease to county or other government agencies. • Off set current costs of off campus leadership retreats • Part of various research grant overhead revenue.
