  1. March 4, 2013 • Agenda • Questions about research?? • Achieve #3 • Population Driving Question: What role does geography play in the settlement and expansion of people?

  2. Population Social Studies Core-9

  3. .

  4. Where is Everyone? • On your map, color in the places you believe people are living. • Color darker to illustrate more people • In what places do you expect to find people? • Why?

  5. Tropic of Capricorn – 22.5 S

  6. Physical Geography & People What role does location play in the settlement and expansion of population?

  7. March 6, 2013 • Agenda • Research Questions?? • Test Re-takes • Cradles of Civilization • Population Key Terms Learning Target: Students will be able to explain the role physical geography plays in the settlement and growth of population; and, students will know the key vocabulary used to describe population growth

  8. Cradles of Civilization • Read and take notes in the margins on how the geography aided in the growth of civilization • Locate the region on the “Cradles of Civilization” map below, draw an outline of the civilization and any important natural boundaries • Share with your group how the physical features of the region helped produce a thriving civilization and show them where on the map to draw in the civilization and natural boundaries • As a group, determine how physical geography impacts the settlement of people in general

  9. Cradles of Civilization

  10. What is population distribution?

  11. Population distribution is the pattern of where people live.

  12. Population Distribution

  13. How do you measure population?

  14. You measure population by looking at population density; the number of people occupying an area of land

  15. Population Density • The number of people occupying an area of land Population of Area Land Area = Population Density

  16. Population Density (people per km2)

  17. How do you measure population change?

  18. You can measure population change through the Crude Birth Rate, the Crude Death Rate, and the Natural Increase Rate.

  19. The Crude Birth Rate (CBR) is the total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 living citizens

  20. The Crude Death Rate (CDR) is the total number of deaths in a year for every 1,000 living citizens

  21. The Natural Increase Rate (NIR) is the percentage by which a population grows each year

  22. NRI = (Crude Birth Rate – Crude Death Rate) / 10

  23. What is the NRI of Afghanistan? CBR: 43 CDR: 16 NRI: ____ 2.7

  24. What other factors affect population growth?

  25. Total Fertility Rate, Infant Mortality Rate, and Life Expectancy also affect population growth.

  26. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the average number of children a woman will have during her child-bearing years

  27. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the annual number of deaths of infants under the age of 1 for every 1,000 live births

  28. Life Expectancy measures the average number of years a newborn can expect to live

  29. March 8, 2013 • Agenda • Achieves? • How & why has population changed over time? • What does our world look like today?

  30. Where do most people live now?

  31. Global Population Nearly 90% of the world’s population lives north of the equator • 90% of the population lives on less than 20% of the land • Most people live in coastal areas • Nearly two-thirds (66%) of people live within 300 miles of an ocean

  32. Global Populationtwo-thirds of the worlds population is concentrated in four specific areas

  33. East AsiaChina, Japan, Koreas, and Taiwan 1.5 Billion

  34. South AsiaIndia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka 1.6 Billion

  35. Southeast AsiaPhilippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java 608 Million

  36. EuropeLargely concentrated in urban areas 740 Million
