Habitat The red-tailed hawk is the most popular hawk in North America. Hawks prefer areas that are open. Hawks like to habitat in places like deserts & fields because its easier to find preys. Since hawks live anywhere without any problems, they can be found in mountainous plains and moist areas. Hawks have been found in Central America, West Indies and Jamaica.
Diet The hawk is a carnivore. The hawk’s diet includes small animals like snakes, fishes, lizards, mice, squirrels and other small animals that are found on the ground. A red-shouldered hawk mostly likes to eat small birds like doves and they like to eat bugs like grasshoppers and crickets.
Hawk’s adaptations (Physical, Behavioral) In the hawk’s starting life, the hawk is fed by the parents until it leaves their nest for good. Once the bird is older it begins to hunt. The hawk kills its preys with its claws like falcons. Hawks prefer to hunt in the day time. The hawk kills small animals using its mouth instead of its claws. Hawks are known for being a violent bird, but the hawk is actually on the peaceful side. The hawk’s main transportation is flying. When the hawk flies, it flaps its wings rapidly, and then the hawk uses its momentum to glide smoothly through the air.
