Four phases of Revolution • 1789-1791 - Moderate Phase – created a constitutional monarchy • 1792-1794 - Radical Phase • 1795-1799 – The Directory • 1799-1815 – The Age of Napoleon
Rumors Create Fear • Starving Peasants began hearing rumors that royal troops were attacking towns and villages and became afraid • Peasants revolted against the nobles in reaction • In Paris different political factions competed to gain power – The Paris Commune replaces the Royal Government
National Assembly Acts • NA voted to end feudal privileges like special hunting rights and exemption from taxes • Issued Declaration of the Rights of Man modeled on D of I that gave all French males equal rights • Angry Parisian women marched on Versailles to make Louis return to Paris
More Reforms of the National Assembly • Church placed under state control • Wrote new constitution (1791) that set up a limited monarchy and gave power to the legislative assembly • Louis tries to escape Paris with his family but fails

Radical Stage • Other European rulers fear that Revolution will spread • Austria declares they will defend the French king • Conditions in Paris worsen as the economy fails and radicals take to the streets
Taking to the streets • Working French people took to the streets to demand a new government – they were called sans-culottes • The legislative assembly declares war on Austria, Prussia, & Britain
Marquis de Lafayette • Known as the hero of two worlds • Fought with George Washington in the Am. Revolution • Headed the National Guard in Paris
Marie - Olympe de Gouges • Wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the female citizen in response to the declaration written by the National Assembly • She was a journalist that was eventually executed for her views
