  3. II. THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ACTS • DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN WRITTEN • 1. A DOCUMENT MODELED IN PART ON THE AMERICAN DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, WRITTEN 13 YRS. EARLIER • 2. STATED ALL MEN WERE “BORN & REMAIN FREE & EQUAL IN RIGHTS”… THEY ENJOYED NATURAL RIGHTS TO “LIBERTY, PROPERTY, SECURITY, & RESISTANCE TO OPPRESSION…” • 3. EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW • 4. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM • 5. LEFT MANY WOMEN DISAPPOINTED!!!!!

  4. B. THINGS INTENSIFY • 1. WOMEN MARCH ON VERSAILLES • 6,000 WOMEN MARCH 13 MILES DEMANDING TO SEE THE KING • REFUSED TO LEAVE UNTIL THE KING MET THEIR MOST IMPORTANT DEMAND – TO RETURN TO PARIS • KING LOUIS XVI, MARIE ANTOINETTE & THEIR SON RETURN TO PARIS

THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOLLOWS THE KING TO PARIS & MAKES HISTORIC CHANGES • THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS PUT UNDER STATE CONTROL • WRITES A CONSTITUTION IN 1791 ESTABLISHING A LIMITED MONARCHY INSTEAD OF AN ABSOLUTE MONARCH • A NEW LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ESTABLISHED THE POWER TO MAKE LAWS, COLLECT TAXES, & DECIDE ON ISSUES RELATED TO WAR&PEACE

  6. LAWMAKERS WOULD BE ELECTED BY TAX PAYING MALE CITIZENS • REFLECTED ENLIGHTENMENT GOALS: ENSURED EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW FOR ALL MALE CITIZENS & ENDED CHURCH INTERFERENCE IN GOVERNMENT!!!

  7. 2. LOUIS XVI TRIES TO ESCAPE FRANCE!!! • JUNE 1791 • HIS DISGUISE IS UNCOVERED. • SOLDIERS TAKE THE ROYAL FAMILY BACK TO PARIS. • TO MANY THIS SHOWED HE WAS A TRAITOR TO THE REVOLUTION

  8. II. EUROPE REACTS TO THE FRENCH REVOLUTION: REVOLUTION IS IN THE AIR & REACTIONS RANGE FROM PRAISE TO FEAR! • A. EUROPEAN RULERS INCREASED BORDER PATROLS TO STOP THE SPREAD OF THE “FRENCH PLAGUE.” • 1. EMIGRES REPORT ATTACKS ON THEIR PRIVILEGES, PROPERTY, RELIGION, & EVEN THEIR LIVES! • 2. EVEN “ENLIGHTENED RULERS” SUCH AS CATHERINE THE GREAT – TURNED AGAINST FRANCE’S REVOLUTION

  9. 3. THE DECLARTION OF PILNITZ ISSUED BY PRUSSIA & AUSTRIA THREATENED TO INTERVENE TO PROTECT THE FRENCH MONARCHY – AUGUST 1791

  10. B. APRIL 1792: LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY DECLARES WAR FIRST ON AUSTRIA AND THEN PRUSSIA, BRITAIN, AND OTHER STATES – FIGHTING LASTS FROM 1792 TO 1815.
