  2. Objectives • Discover some characteristics of the McCarthy era. • See how the Cold War was waged in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America during the 1950s. • Understand how the arms race developed.

A) The McCarthy Era • 205 names was really 57 all investigated under Truman’s loyalty program – did start anti-Communist hysteria • Needed to get re-elected – Wisconsin • McCarthyism: baseless accusations, un-provable charges, and smear tactics to become popular. • Attacked national hero Marshall (Plan) over China • Attacked the Army – televised – world saw McCarthy for what he was – Senate condemned him

  5. B) The Cold War in the 1950s • Eisenhower’s Sec of State Dulles hated communism and containment – Eisenhower did not want war – US stayed out of uprisings in Europe – Germany 1953 and Poland and Hungary in 1956 • Pulled US out of Korea – but helped France militarily in Vietnam

C) US in the Middle East • US supported Israel in their war for Independence in 1948 • IN 1952 CIA helped the Shah of Iran overthrow the pro-communist leader • Suez Crisis – Egypt took the Suez Canal from British – they and France attacked – US stayed neutral and allowed Egypt to finally keep it. • Eisenhower Doctrine – US will help any county in the Middle East that doesn’t want to become communist

D) US in Latin America • US invaded Nicaragua and Honduras to help pro-American leaders • 1947 signed the Rio Pact defense Alliance (18) • 1948 established OAS – help increase co-operation • 1954 CIA overthrew government of Guatemala to help a US fruit company • USSR thought US was escalating the Cold War

E) The Arms Race • Arms race – struggle to gain weapons superiority • Deterrence – make the US military so strong that no enemy would dare attack • Brinkmanship – policy of risking war in order to protect national interests (660) • ICBM – long-range rockets that deliver nuclear warheads (US bombers) • Sputnik – first artificial satellite to orbit earth • U-2 incident – American spy plane shot down by the USSR 15 miles high • US lagging behind in military
