Vs. 1-3 are a continuation of Chapter 4.Vs. 4-13 continues where 4:6 left off. Vs. 14-21 closing encour- agement in regards to our spiritual life with a focus on prayer.
"Whoever" tells us that there are no exceptions. Every believer should be functioning in Impersonal and Unconditional love.
"Believes" - PISTEUOThis sets the standard for qualification; every member of the Royal Family of God.
You have believed in the past that led to your salvation, which continues to be a present reality.
"That Jesus is the Christ" Emphasizes the humanity of our Lord in that He is the prophesized Messiah / Anointed One.
This continues to refute the Gnostic heresies in regards to our Lord.
Jesus Christ is perpetually the God/Man in hypostatic union who is begotten from God the Father, who also paid the penalty for our sins.
“Is born of God” Should be “has been born from God”. GENNAO - born from or begotten.
Just as Jesus was begotten / born from God, the believer too is a child from God.
The past completed action of faith for salvation, has tremendous continuous results today. It means a brand new start in life that leads to growth and maturity.
ETERNAL SECURITY! The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, is the means by which we are born again, with the result of being sealed forever. 2 Cor 1:21-22; Eph 1:13; 4:30.
Eph 1:13, “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation - having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
2 Cor 1:21-22,“Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.”
“Whoever loves the Father”Emphasizes the one who brought us forth at the new birth. The one who gave birth to us in the born again life.
This is our personal love for God the Father. You loved Him in the past when you believed for your salvation and you continue to love Him today.
“Loves the child born of Him” This is our AGAPE love for all believers - the proof of our faith and love in the Father.
1) Verse one is a new subject, and concludes the previous one. It is a useful closing caution in regards to:
a) Loving your brother, b) Loving him as you see him, c) Loving him because God commands it, and
a) Loving your brother, b) Loving him as you see him, c) Loving him because God commands it, and d) Loving him because he is also begotten of God.
2) We are instructed to watch ourselves carefully in regards to loving our fellow believers, children of God.
3) This is not talking about a human love, but the virtue love that is God and is from God as we reside inside GPS.
4) This love should attest to the fact of God giving us His Spirit, with the result of our operating in all godliness (virtue) out of respect for God our Father.
5) We love those born of God because God loves them, and we supposedly love God.
