  2. What is Assistive Technology? • Assistive Technologies are products that are designed to help students overcome an impairment or deficit and to make it possible for those students to be successful and as independent as possible.

  3. Law in regard to Assistive Technology According to Roblyer and Doering, the following laws promote the use of technology by individuals with disabilities: • The Technology- Related Assistance Act for Individuals with Disabilities, passed in 1988, provides funding to provide assistive devices and services to individuals with disabilities (2013).

  4. Laws cont. • The Reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1997, mandates that each individualized education program (IEP) team at least considers assistive technology when forming a plan for a student with a disability (2013).

  5. Assistive Technology for the Hearing Impaired FM Amplification System The teacher wears a wireless microphone and the student with the hearing impairment or learning disability wears a receiver that amplifies what is being said. Source: TecEar

  6. Source: Vision Cue Assistive Technology for the Visually Impaired Magnification Systems The student can place materials under the camera and set the device to the desired magnification. The materials may be moved around as needed and the information is shown on the monitor in a size that allows the student to read it more comfortably.

  7. Assistive Technology for the Learning Disabled Reading Pen This is a text-to-speech product that allows students to listen to information that they are not able to read. Source: WizCom Tech

  8. Source: Enabling Devices Assistive Technology for the Physically Disabled Joystick This is a device that can move in all directions. There are some wheelchairs that are opereated by a joystick and they can also be used to operate a cursor on a computer.
