  1. LTG Mary Legere Successfully Transitioning From the Military to Civilian Life

  2. Military personnel, like LTG Mary Legere, may find the task of transitioning from military life to civilian life daunting. To help make the transition a little bit easier, here are some tips to make your military to civilian transition successful. • Attend a Transition Assistance Program workshop. A three-day workshop that covers career exploration, job search strategies, and cover letter, resume, and interview preparation. This program is available to all military personnel within 180 days of their separation. • Think about your transferable skills. Consider how you can describe your military experiences for a corporate role.

  3. • Adjust your body language and speech. Try not to use military jargon, use civilian time rather than military time, and address your professional contact by their name rather than by Sir or Ma’am. • Connect with recruiters who specialize in helping military personnel transition to civil life. • Play up your military strengths. The natural leadership, precise communication skills, execution and accountability you gained in the military is a valuable asset and should be showcased during your interview. • Network. The best chance you will have of landing a job is to network with other veterans who have already made the transition.

  4. Serving in the military is an honorable career and one that can help you create a life outside of the military. To successfully transition to a civilian life, you need to use the same hard work and dedication that made you a success in the military.
