  2. WELCOME “This webinar will focus upon how assessment can be made more relevant to the education and larger community – a method for the Arts to lead the way in changing education to meet student learning needs.”

  3. Presenters & Agenda • Vicki Breen, Arts Consultant, NM PED, Introduction of panel and Elementary Arts Education Program; summary of the emergence of the elementary electronic portfolio initiatives. • Tyson Ledgerwood, Elementary Arts Coordinator, Hobbs Municipal Schools: Electronic portfolio design beginning with 3rd and 4th grade students through higher education students through music, dance, theater and visual arts. • Sally Fitzgibbon, High School Art Teacher, Los Alamos Public Schools: Overview of beginning of Los Alamos Schools focus on art and music teachers instructing all 4th – 6th grade students in how to develop and maintain and post their electronic portfolios on district cyberspace.

Presenters & Agenda • Kim LeTellier, Elementary Music Teacher and electronic portfolio coordinator – 2009-2010. follow-up and description of the elementary electronic portfolio program in Los Alamos Public Schools and how the program has progressed. • Bonnie Bernal, Elementary Art Teacher, Estancia Municipal Schools elementary student electronic portfolios using Davis e-portfolio and e-books. • Brooke Gold, Elementary Art Teacher, Rio Rancho Public Schools: Electronic portfolios at 3rd grade. Her work toward advanced degree with this focus.

Elementary ArtsProgram – Fine Arts Education Act Program is based on the understanding that these arts programs will encourage cognitive and affective development by: • Focusing on a variety of learning styles and engaging students who might otherwise fail; • Training students in complex thinking and learning; • Helping students to devise creative solutions for problems; • Providing students with new challenges, and • Teaching students how to work cooperatively with others and to understand and value diverse cultures.

  6. Elementary ArtsProgram – Fine Arts Education Act This program was enacted to provide funding to encourage school districts to offer opportunities for elementary school students to participate in arts education, including music, dance, theatre and visual arts.

  7. Elementary ArtsProgram – Fine Arts Education Act Approved application required to receive elementary arts funding; Funding flows through the NM State Equalization Guarantee, (NM funding formula); Annual meeting of Program Managers and Arts Teachers;

Elementary ArtsProgram – Fine Arts Education Act Program Evaluation required in Renewal Application: • Program effectiveness and progress toward goals; • What areas of the program need strengthening: How has Parent Advisory Council been involved? • How have professional development and training opportunities been utilized? • Are student outcomes changing? • What changes or revisions will be made in the program? • Does program plan narrative align to budget?

  9. Los Alamos Program2008-2009 • Focus on 4th – 6th grade art and music electronic portfolio • Coordinators hired to develop program focus

  10. Los Alamos Program2008-2009 • Meeting between Los Alamos Superintendent and Deputy Secretary for Learning and Accountability • Discussion about electronic portfolio – process equates quadratic algebra • Discussion about how much cyberspace needed for this project

Los Alamos Program2008-2009 • Los Alamos Superintendent background: • BA in Arts Education • MA in Art Education • Ed.D with a focus in the Arts • Taught art for more than 50 years • Age groups from 2 year olds through undergraduate students • Led team of teachers in arts integration grant for six years – 3 Districts • Practicing artist whose work is in collections around the country
