Diamond Research Status in Minsk Group Presented by Igor Emeliantchik IV Workshop Instrumentation of the Forward Region of a Linear Collider Detector Zeuthen, Germany August 26 - 28, 2004
Two Directions of Activity: 1. Attempt to create a particle detector on the base of monocrystalline synthetic diamond of Minsk production 2. Research on diamonds of Freiburg production
Monocrystalline Diamond Detector of Minsk Production up to 8 mm • Size: 3 x 2 x 0.8 mm • Coating: Fe-Ni • Material: • artificial monocrystalline diamond of instrumentation grade (nitrogen content 1019 atom/cm3) Crystal cutting: the side facet is taken because the base one is usually more defective (metallic inclusions) ADAMAS plant is also producing so called “non-nitrogen” diamond (type IIA, nitrogen content less than 1017 atom/cm3). Possibility to use it as particle detector is currently investigated.
Test of Minsk Diamond in Zeuthen Charge collection distance is approximately the same as that of Freiburg diamonds
Test of Minsk Diamond in CERN Test was performed with PS accelerator, T7 beam site Fast extraction mode was used Number of particles per bunch was monitored with calibrated scintillator Only very preliminary processing of beam test results is performed so far, which shows that the amplitude of Minsk diamond signal was approximately the same as that of the Freiburg diamond with 4x4 mm pad.
Test of Freiburg Diamonds at PITZ Diamond Diamond is located outside the beam tube and registers secondary -quanta
Dark Current Measurement with Diamond Detectors at PITZ HV Diamond 1st diamond (near the cavity) OpAmp AD829 Output 2nd diamond (near the tube, 70cm away from the cavity) Readout circuit Diamond response to the cavity dark current
Test of the Possibility of Beam Monitoring with Diamond Detector at PITZ Dependence of the dark current on magnetic field of the main solenoid, measured with diamond detector
Minsk Monocrystalline Diamond at PITZ Cavity dark current, registered with Minsk monocrystalline diamond
Conclusions • Monolithic diamond of Minsk production remains a valid option of a sensor • for Beamcal • Our diamond detectors are already mature enough to try practical applications • like beam monitoring
