  1. Coastal Chaos Luisa Schleicher Sage McConnell By: Kathryn Wagner Claire Jaworski and Alexis Ferrier

  2. What are coastlines? • Coastlines are our beaches and our areas between the water and the land. • We believe that our coastlines should be protected and kept free of the buildings that diminish the aesthetic beauty of our beaches and coastal areas. Of course there are practical reasons too…

  3. Save our coastlines • Introduce a policy that will restrict the number of houses on the coast!

  4. Issues NOW! We are . . . • Intruding on endangered species’ habitat! • Destroying natural beauty! • Polluting water with debris! • Spending millions of dollars in reparations! • Forcing beaches to adapt faster than normal! Picture by mbcudmore

  5. A Study • We will conduct a study of a beach home and watch what happens to it, the beach around it, and the wildlife living there over time. • We will also monitor a coastline without any building on it and watch what happens to it- and the animals there- over time. • We predict, based on other findings, that the beach with no house on it will be in better condition than the coastline with.

  6. Benefits of a clear Coastline By keeping our coastline housing free we can… • Keep wildlife in their natural habitats • Create less pollution • Keep the coastline and beaches natural and scenic • Keep the houses from getting damaged PipingPlover

  7. Our Goal All new structures will be constructed no less than 50 meters away from the high tide mark. No structures will be constructed on the beach.

  8. Component of building permit that all new buildings will be constructed no less than fifty meters (approximately 164 feet) away from the high spring tide mark. No buildings will be constructed on previously existing sand or gravel on the coastline. All currently existing, commercial or industrial buildings in the target area of the coastline will be repaired until the building is no longer being used. All currently existing, privately owned or other buildings in the target area of the coastline will not be repaired from damages caused by the natural coast environment (ocean, ground which it is built upon, etc.), but will be kept until demolition is necessary.

  9. To sum it all up.. • Our coastlines • Start out small- baby steps! • Everyone benefits
