  5. History of the Social Work Major Social work is a profession that improves the quality of life. Most would agree that the professional social work begun by Jane Adams, a social activist, feminist, and advocate for ideas, laws, and people who were suffering (1860-1935)

Words from Brittany Brandon 1.Why did you choose to major in social work? - “I chose this major because I wanted a career that directly works and help individuals in their daily situations I want to lend a helping hand, and possibly change someones life.” 2. What career do you want to pursue in the future? - “I am deciding to become a family case worker, probation or parole officer, or substance abuse counselor.” 3. What values do you think you will gain from this major? - “I hope to build my communication skills, and become a social person.”

  8. Words from Dr. Dobrin 1. Why did you choose to major/teach in social work? - “ I majored in sociology in college. I did an internship with a social worker and realized social work was more hands on. I just wanted to help people.” 2. What type of personality does a person have to have in order to pursue this major - “ Person has to be self reflective, self aware, and have a strong desire to learn and self desire to help others.” 3. Are there any downsides to this major? - “ It can be difficult, time consuming, and have a negative impact on your social life.”

  9. Continued 4.What values do you hold with this major? - “ Individual, choice, justice, freedom, strength, and success model based major.” 5. If you could give advice to upcoming students like me, what would it be? - “Read and Write Down EVERYTHING !

  10. Words from Dr. Payne 1. Why did you choose to major/teach in social work? - “ I am passionate about my profession and one of the best ways to pass on that passion is to teach.” 2. What type of personality does a person have to have in order to pursue this major? - “ A social worker needs to optimist. For other He/she needs to care deeply for others and be willing to work very hard.” Advice Given: “If you want to major in social work begin planning your courses around areas of interest and be sure to confer with a social work adviser early in your career.”

  11. Opportunities and why this major is unique from other universities. Opportunities - Upon graduation, you get ready for graduate school for social work. (Dr. Dobrin) Why its unique -The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and meets all requirements. (Dr. Payne)
