The School Festival” This task adapted from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium http://www.smarterbalanced.org/
Part A: Expenses Your first task is to determine how much money to spend on food and drinks, prizes and activities
Last Year’s Festival BudgetThis graph shows how last year’s budget of $800 was spent…
Task…….. Stop: You may not use calculators, paper or pencils on this task. Reason as to which restaurant would be the better choice. With your partner, decide how you would model your solution mathematically. 4 x 200 > 3 x 200 + 150
Standards for Mathematical Practice? #2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively #3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others #4 Model with mathematics #8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
The Standard…. 5.NBT.6 requires students to “solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g. by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.”
Task….. Determine the amount of flour and brown sugar needed for the recipe. What visual fraction models are appropriate for solving this problem?
Reflection….. In your group, discuss the benefits and roadblocks in assigning a task like this..
