  2. Political Parties • Political Party – organization of individuals with broad, common interests who organize to win elections etc. • Two-Party System • What the US currently has in place

Growth of American Parties • Constitution says nothing about political parties • Many delegates to the Constitutional Convention were against them • George Washington warned against them • but. . . . . . . . . . . • By the late 1790s we had two rival groups • Thomas Jefferson vs. Alexander Hamilton

  4. The Democratic Party • Democratic-Republican Party • They split apart • Democrats • Led by Andrew Jackson • Wanted to stress the fact that Democrats were for the common people • Ran against the Whigs until about 1850

  5. The Republican Party • 1854 – The nation faced an issue of slavery • Republicans believed slavery had to be abolished in new territories • 1860 • Abraham Lincoln will win the election as the first Republican president

  6. Third Parties • Third Parties – Small minor parties • Populist Party – called for direct election of senators and an eight hour workday • Progressive Party – allowed ideas for people to have more of a voice in the government

Types of Third Parties • Single Issue Parties – Does not last long • Prohibitionists Party – outlaw sale of alcohol (1872) • Ideological Parties - Support a particular philosophy • Communist Parties • Independent Candidates – people who cannot get support from the other two parties • Ross Perot (90s) • Obstacles to Third Parties • Rarely win an election • Have trouble raising money

How the Parties Differ Democrat Party Republican Party • Federal government should be more involved in regulating the economy • Provide housing, income, education and jobs for the poor • Help the nation’s economy grow then poor people will have a better chance of finding jobs on their own • Less government regulation of the economy

  9. How the Parties Differ • Platform – series of statements expressing the party’s principles, beliefs, and positions on election issues • Tells voters what the party claims it will do if it wins the election • Plank – Individual part of the platform
