Europe The Old World
Quick Facts • Area: 1,888,688 mi2
Quick Facts • Population: 510,898,860
Quick Facts • Countries: 37 ½ • (Russia is only partly in Europe and separated by the Ural Mountains) • (Yugoslavia broke into Serbia and Montenegro)
The Alps The Alps span across France, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, and Slovenia. They separate the Italian Peninsula from the rest of the European continent.
The Pyrenees The Pyrenees run right in between Spain and France (with little-bitty Andorra squeezed in between). They separate the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) from the rest of the continent.
The Urals The Urals are located in far east Europe. They mark the boundary between Europe and Asia. The Urals run through Russia and most Russians live on the European side (but that’s another chapter)
The Carpathians The Carpathian Mountains run through Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine. These mountains are sometimes used to mentally separate Europe from Russian-Asian countries.
The Caucasus The Caucasus Mountains, much like the Ural mountains to the north, mark the southeastern boundary to Europe and separate it from Asia.
The Rhine The Rhine River is one of the two major rivers that run through Europe, running through Netherlands, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. At around 820 miles, and castles lining the river, it is easy to see that it has served for centuries of trading.
The Danube The Danube River spans 1,771 miles, touches 9 countries, and connects to the Black Sea. Like the Rhine, it is lined with castles, as well as cities, and is a major route of transportation.
The Italian Peninsula Italy
The Iberian Peninsula Spain & Portugal

The Scandinavian Peninsula Composed of Norway and Sweden the “Scandinavian Countries”
