***********New Course Offerings In Biology 2012********** Intersession (May-June) Mon and Wed 1:30 – 4:30 Summer (July-August) Mon and Wed 1:30 – 4:30 BI496Q: Wetland Ecology BI396N: Plant Life in Aquatic and Amphibious Habitats What distinguishes one wetland from another? In wetlands, productivity and ecosystem processes are ultimately dependent on plant health and plant community composition. Understanding the characteristics of successful wetland plants is, therefore, required for effective wetland management and conservation. In “Plant Life in Aquatic and Amphibious Habitats” we will identify the characteristics of “successful wetland plants” through lecture, laboratory and field* community structure and function. Prereqs : BI110/111 and BI266 Bog, bottomland, fen, marsh, muskeg, oxbow, sedge meadow, slough and swamp are only a few of the names to describe wetland ecosystems. But what defines a wetland and how is one distinguished from another? In Wetland Ecology we will examine the common characteristics of wetlands and identify the features used for wetland classification. Lecture and laboratory exercises* will be augmented with field trips to local wetlands. Prereq: BI396N What makes a “successful” wetland plant? These courses have integrated lectures and labs. There is no separate lab component. Field trips will take place during the regular 3hr meeting time. One mandatory field trip will take place outside of our normal meeting times.
