  2. what does this mean? 1 + = 2 + = 3 = +

  3. The story answers a question… There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it? He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.” Jesus replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

  4. … here we go … • But because the scholar wanted to prove himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbour? • Jesus replied …

  5. A Jewish man goes to Jericho and gets beaten up by brigands

  6. He is left at the side of the road, left for dead.

  7. A priest passes by and does not help him.

  8. A Levite (temple worker) passes by and does not help.

  9. A Samaritan sees him and is moved with compassion and helps him.

  10. He takes him to the local Inn and pays for his stay.

  11. “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbour to the beaten up man?” The scholar answered, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

  12. What does this story mean? A parable is a story that has a moral meaning. The Jews considered the Samaritans outcasts; they treated them as enemies and would have nothing to do with them. So when Jesus said the Good Samaritan was the one showing love and being the good neighbour, he meant we should helpthose in need regardless of race or colour.

  13. Quick Quiz: answer in full sentences • Who came across the beaten man first? • What did this person do? • Did the Levite help? • What did the Samaritan do? • What is this story telling us?

  14. These are your captions Comic Strip Task You are going to be doing a comic strip so lets look at the main bits of the story. • A Jewish man is beaten up and injured • A priest walks past • A Levite walks past • A Samaritan (who is the enemy) walks up to the man and helps the man • The man is taken to an inn and the Samaritan pays for his care • The story teaches us to treat everyone no matter who they are.

  15. It should look like this …

  16. How can we put this parable into practice? Jesus taught people the golden rule, which is “you should love your neighbour as yourself.” This means that you should treat people the way you want to be treated, regardless of race, colour, gender or anything else.

  17. Are we good Samaritans? Would you help the following people? • Write down a reason why you would or would not help these people..... • I would help this person because... • I wouldn’t help this person because...
