Focus of Discussion Career and College Readiness (CCR) and the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) • CCSS define literacy as everyone’s responsibility • NGSS will provide content and process standards, and will complement CCSS • MMC credit is based on proficiency with content and skills, not seat time • Options for earning required credits – “any time, any place, any way, any pace”
Common Core State Standards • State-led effort to create a common core of academic standards in K-12 English language arts/literacy and mathematics • Based on research and evidence, internationally benchmarked, aligned with college and workforce expectations • Nearly 50 states have adopted the CCSS
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) • State-led effort to create a common academic standards in K-12 Science and Engineering • Based on the National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education (2011) • 26 states are leading NGSS development • Michigan is a Lead State
Michigan Merit Curriculum is still law • CCSS replace High School Content Expectations and Grade Level Content Expectations for mathematics and ELAonly • In addition, CCSS define and clarify literacy requirements for other MMC credits • NGSS will replace HSCE for science
