  3. ISSUE How do students who are enrolled in AVID or AP Human Geography meet LUSD’s graduation requirements: Driver Education Health

  4. Driver’s Education Requirement EC Section 51220(j) states in part that: The adopted course of study for grades 7-12, inclusive, shall offers courses in the following areas of study …. (j) Automobile driver education While driver education is required to be offered, the local school board may, pursuant to E.C. Section 5122.3 determine if it is a required course for graduation. Solution: Amend Board Policy to remove driver education as a requirement for freshmen students enrolled in AVID or AP Human Geography.

Health Requirement Since 1992, public schools have been required to teach HIV/AIDS prevention education at least once in high school: In accordance to EC Section 51934, HIV/AIDS prevention instruction shall provide information on six required lessons Anyone can teach the lessons as long as they have received training Solution: Add these lessons into the ninth grade Physical Education course

  6. RECOMMENDATION Amend graduation requirements to read: “Freshmen will choose between one of three pathways to meet graduation requirements” OR OR Effective 2013-14 school year for incoming 9th grade students

Valedictorian CriteriaBoard Policy 5127 Current Language: • For the purpose of determining the grade point average for Valedictorian, beginning with the graduating class of 2013, Mark Points/Value Points will be used. Mark/Value Points are calculated by multiplying the full value of an earned grade (either weighted or unweighted) by the corresponding credit weight (2.5, 5.0, or 7.5). Total cumulative Mark Points/Value Points are divided by the cumulative earned credit total to produce an accurate cumulative grade point average. Mark Point/Value Points include pass/fail classes.

  8. Board Policy 5127 proposed change The criteria used to determine the Valedictorian is: • GPA of 4.0 or higher, and have no grade less than an A, except in an AP or UC approved course.

  9. Board Rule 5121 • Board Rule 5121 states: “in grades seven through twelve, teachers shall use narrative descriptions or written notices with letter grades A through F to indicate the student’s level of achievement” • Recommendation: enforce this rule and no longer allow any P/F grades. This would include Teaching Assistants (TA) and CAHSEE intervention classes unless noted in a student’s IEP or 504 Plan.
