Why Indiana has Decided to Use Barcodes • 53% of paper returns received are generated by a computer • Many of the advantages of Electronic Filing • Reduced data entry time Reduces cost • Reduced error correction time Reduces cycle time • With fewer issues to resolve • Signature with original on file • Evidence attached • Taxpayer comfort level maintained • Reduced cost to the Taxpayer • Feasible to Implement and Maintain • Hardware cost < $50,000
Form Entry Taxpayer or Paid Preparer uses tax preparation software to complete tax return Print With Barcode Just before printing, the tax preparation software will be modified to call a routine (DLL) passing all of the data from the form, and the routine will return a picture (bitmap) of the barcode which will be printed on the form Sign and Submit Taxpayer will review the form, sign, attach supporting documents and mail as usual Validate and Post The scanned data will go through the same validation and posting processes as if it had been keyed in or submitted electronically Open and Scan Data Entry Center will receive form with barcode, apply document locator number (DLN), and scan into Revenue integrated tax system Added Code to Paid Preparer software Added Code to Revenue integrated system software 2-D Process
