Le Morte The end of the book… Yes you may rejoice in this!
Sir Gareth Change is on it’s way
Gareth’s story is the last manifestation of the truly idealistic Round Table After it comes inner and outer conflicts, adulteries, feuds, wards, betrayals, murders, Grail-quests and ultimately the downfall of Arthur and Camelot
He is one of the most gentle and good knights of the Round Table • He seems to be a favorite of Malory…how can you tell? • What are Gareth’s heroic qualities? • What does Gareth Represent?
Malory has Gareth in a disguise in order to make his aristocratic qualities more shinning. How? • Three people can tell he is of noble birth • Gawain • Arthur • Launcelot
His quest begins on Pentecost • Pentecost: Christian festival on the seventh Sunday after Easter and celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Apostles • Why this day? • Gareth=Embodiment of Mercy with Gawain=Embodiment of Revenge
Lyoness to Morgan Le Fay One in the same?
Both live on the Isle of Avalon • Both are magic users • Gringamour is brother to Lyoness and in some tales a lover to Morgan Le Fay • Ring of Lyoness has precursors to the rings Morgan gives to her lovers in her various shape-shifting forms • Same person?
Courtly Love Not all it’s cracked up to be
Decrees that the true Lover, struck with love for his lady at first sight, will love her only and will fight on her behalf and for her honor • True love can only exist outside marriage • Tradition of arranged marriages=business • This is usually true except with Gareth
Percivale • a very holy knight • that is saved by God’s grace • from the wicked lady (Lucifer) • By the glowing cross on his sword
Launcelot • Vainglory and Knightly Pride • Warned in a dream…how? • Why can’t he drink from the grail? • Hair of the hermit. This is suppose to increase his virtue…torment shows that he is sinful • Black Knight…increase glory…knightly pride • Earthly sin…he must transcend to know the mysteries of God.
Gawain • Ector de Marys is NOT the same Ector that is Arthur’s father. He is Launcelot’s brother • Kills his own brother…Uwayne! MAJOR SIN • What visions does he have? • Flowery Meadow-patience and humility • This is the IDEAL Round Table
Gawain • Black Bulls-sinful knights • White Bulls-Galahad and Percivale • White Bull with Black spots- Bors • This foretells death of whom? • He doesn’t listen to the hermit and therefore turns his back on God.
Bors • Sinned once of the flesh • He does as the hermit says • No meat • No wine • Sleep on floor • Go to mass • More Holy
Bors • He is not fooled by the devil. Twelve maids attempt to jump off the wall and allows them to save his soul. • The priest on the black horse is a fiend • Black=evil • He gains the boat to be taken to the Holy Grail…Sails of “white”
The Grail • Parallels • Gawain mercilessly beheads a lady who threw herself over the knight just as Lionel does the hermit. • Loyalty to Arthur is treason because they are loyal to Arthur and not the true king…Christ • Knightly code is Arthur’s and NOT God’s
The Grail • Move away from the world and worldly sin • God’s code • Chastity • Charity • Humility
Launcelot and Gwynevere The love story that isn’t pure and turns out to be a lot weirder and more like a soap opera than you remember as a child.
Launcelot is the best “worldly “ knight while Galahad is a saintly knight • Mallory seems to state you can be partially virtuous but you must always strive to be virtuous. • What is Launcelot’s major sin?
Launcelot learns from the Grail • Humility • He doesn’t heal Urry because he no longer craves glory and knightly pride • He heals Urry through the graces of God and for God’s glory
LOVE • He casts aside the notion that marriage and virtuous love are less than pure or a sin • “Man must love woman because God created him thus” • Malory compares his time to Arthur’s…love was pure and NOT lewd as it is now. • “It was in honor of their ladies that knights bore arms and won glory.”
Launcelot Changes • Fighting for knightly pride and his own honor • Aspiring to fight for God’s honor • Fighting for his love’s honor • Which is the most honorable?
Launcelot does what Gwynevere wants • He doesn’t fight Melly • He is the best “worldly” knight • He heals Urry • Galahad heals the Maimed King • Launcelot, being so faithful to Gwynevere and forsakes Arthur
Names that might appear • Bors • Percival • Arthur • Galahad • Launcelot • Gaerhis • Gareth • Patrice • Madore • Uwain • Gwynevere • Maid of Astolat-Elaine • Mordred • Mellyagraunce-Melly • Gawain • Ector de Marys • Bedivere • Queen of the Outer Isles • Maid of the Apple • Agrravayne
