Open Source Software A Presentation By: Ben Hayes
What is Open Source Software? • Open Source Software is software that is built and modified by other people within the company. It gives the users access to its source codes. Source codes show the users how to use the software.
THE DIFFERENCE • Open Source software is different from other software in the sense that it is FREE! • The only expense is training and support, “But the cost is still less than using proprietary software” (What Is Open Source Software?).
Support Packages • Companies such as IBM and Sun Microsystems offer support systems that make Open Source Software training and support even less expensive.
Advantages • Open Source Software can be inspected, downloaded, published, and changed as needed by anyone within the company. • The software language is easier to understand and allows the users easier access. • It also allows the user to make changes that he/she feels is better.
Disadvantages • When using Open Source software, if a problem occurs, it is up to the user to fix the problem. • Other software , such as Microsoft software can be fixed by contacting support, and paying for the problem to be fixed, while Open Source is to be fixed by the user.
Examples • Open Source Software is everywhere. • Some examples include: • Firefox • WordPress • OpenOffice.org • Mozzila.org
Conclusion • Open Source Software is a great for someone who is willing to make changes in order to benefit themselves and the software. It is essentially more work, but the benefit is worth the work if the changes made are successful.
