  1. ACADEMIC VOCABULARYROUTINE

  2. How does this routine help us? Using the Academic Vocabulary Routine will help us to activate our prior knowledge, teach us new word meanings, structure competent usage, and help us to comprehend(understand) what we are reading.

  3. What are the 4 steps of Academic Vocabulary? • Step 1. Pronounce • Step 2. Rate • Step 3. Explain • Step 4. Discuss

  4. PRONOUNCE When reading it is important to know how to correctlypronounce(say) the words you are reading. Here are some suggestions to help you. • Say the word out loud • Say the word a second time • Determine (figure out) its part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) Example Word: Expedition One more time: Expedition Part of speech: Expedition is a noun

  5. RATE Using a rating scale of 1-4 is the second step of Academic Vocabulary. Using a rating scale will help the reader determine how well They (you) know a word. Example Word: Expedition I. don’t know the word 2. I’ve seen it or heard it 3. I know it’s meaning 4. I know it and use it Think about the word expedition. Does it sound familiar? When would we use the word expedition? What topic would you be exploring?

  6. EXPLAIN Once a reader becomes familiar with a word, he/she will be able to explain (verbally and in writing) the meaning of that word. The reader will also be able to provide an example. Example Word: Expedition An expedition is a journey that has a definite purpose.

  7. DISCUSS Academic Vocabulary will help build a readers’ background knowledge. The reader will then be able to have meaningfuldiscussions about words that were once unfamiliar to the reader. Example If you go on a hike to a specific location, such as the top of a mountain, then you can call your hike an expedition. “The guide lead us on an expedition to the top of the mountain.”

  8. DO NOW Do Now: Sketch a picture that illustrates the words Mommy, affection, and parenting.

  9. AIM Aim: How will we use word study during ELA?

  10. EXIT PASS Directions: Write a sentence using each word. 1. Mommy 2. Affection 3. Parenting
