New France 1534–1763 • France took interest in the New World • In 1604, first North American fur trading monopoly – led to first colonization • Samual de Camplain– 1608 founded Quebec City. Permanent settlement and capital of New France • First British settlements in New Foundland. • FAST FORWARD 150 YEARS => • Seven Year’s War – Britain vs. France/Spain 1756 -1763 • Resulted in France giving up North American territory to British • New British rulers retained and protected most of the property, religious, political, and social culture of the French-speaking habitants, Quecbec Act 1774
American War of Independence • The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) • Between British Monarchy and 13 British Colonies – concluded in global war between Britain, France, the Dutch, Spain and aboriginal groups etc. • 13 Colonies rejected legitimacy of British Parliament to govern them without representation (violated Rights of English man First American Flag with 13 Stars to represent the 13 colonies .

American War of Independence • 1776 Americans formally declared independence as one nation USA • Claiming own sovereignty and rejecting any allegiance to British Monarchy - King George III (1760-1820) -> • French gov’t secretly provided supplies, ammunitions and weapons to revolutionaries (What was happening in France during this time?) • 1783 Treaty of Paris ended war (between UK, France, Spain, Neatherlands) • Recognized the sovereignty of US over the territory before 49th parallel, as south as Florida, and far west as Mississippi River
The American Revolution and BNA • Thousands of Loyalists flee to BNA (what is now Canada) • Americans though BNA would join revolution • Americans seized Quebec threatening Quebec Act • Aboriginals (Mohawk Nation) good relationship with British and helped protect BNA • Joseph Brant, Mohawk leader, met King and Queen, ambassador for six nations.
War of 1812 • war between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815. • Cause: British interference with trade between France and US • BNA tempting target to USA • ½ million vs. 8 million • Invasion of Canada changed no boundaries – solidified loyalty to Britain British troops burning down the original White House in Washington.
