Status of WP 1 • Overall objectives of WP1 • Identification, classification and mapping of existing EU biorefineries (resources, products, process) and of existing prospectives. • Measurement of the current processing potential of existing facilities, including energy balance and life cycle analysis. • Outputs : define the state of the art of existing European biorefineries.

Status of WP 1 • Past Timetable : • May 4th : WP1- WebMeeting 1: selection of the concepts, agreed on a general definition of Biorefinery and preparing the questionnaire • May 9th : WP1- WebMeeting 2: validation of concepts selected, finalization of questionnaire and list of stakeholders. • June 12th : Biorefinery Euroview WP1/WP2 and BIOPOL WP1 coordination Meeting in Brussels : agreed on a common industrial questionnaire (BIOPOL/BE) • June 28th: Phone Meeting : finalization on common BIOPOL/BE questionnaire • July 10th and 11th: WP1/WP2/WP3 - Meeting / Project Executive Board • Early- Mid July : Send of the questionnaire (First Deadline : September 7th ; Second Deadline : October 14th) • September 27th : WP1/WP2 Meeting in Lille : • WP1: Analyze of answers of questionnaires and information received from each partners • WP1: Selection of industrial plants to visit

Concepts for biorefinery in Europe • Concepts of Biorefinery selected : • Green Biorefinery • typically companies that run in a campaign fashion, using wet biomass, i.e. unstable renewable resources, such as potatoes, tapioca, sugar beets and sugar cane • Cereal Biorefinery • using stable dry cereals such as maize, wheat and rice to produce starch and derivatives • Oilseed Biorefinery • using oil-containing seeds, such as rapeseed, sunflower, olive and soy, typically producing food and feed ingredients, biodiesel and oleochemical products • Forest based and lignocellulosic Biorefinery • using forest based and lignocellulosic biomass to produce cellulose fibres, chemicals, lignin and energy.

Review of existing platforms • Based on information received from each partners • Based on a review of information from industrial questionnaire sent to EU industries (common with Biopol) • Existing/pilot/ futur industrial Platforms : 287 contacts / 212 industries • Review of existing industrial plants in EU and outside EU, including their advancement state (industrial, pilot plant, …) … partially done. • 8 - 10 plants has been selected to be visited as a sample of the different categories existing in Europe, from a technological, geographical and agricultural point of view and considering the 4 concepts selected in Task 1.1…. completed. • D1.2 : Report : Selection and description (advancement state) of the 8-10 selected platforms

Mapping of biorefinery • Visit of industrial plants in Europe. • July 12th: visit of Biorefinery site of Pomacle/Bazancourt (France): • R&D plant ARD and Soliance • Pulp paper straw pilot plant (process CIMV) • Bioethanol plant : Cristanol • October 20th : visit of Cargill Gent and Nedalco • November/December: the visit of the others industrial plants (selected in Task 1.2: WP1- T1.2.2) to collect more data : • Industrial questionnaire to complete (if not already) • Who will visit the plants ? • An European mapping will be built based on extrapolation of the previous samples. • A comparison will be made with the main existing biorefineries outside Europe. • D1.3 : Map of existing European industrial sites • D1.4 : Review of non European Industrial biorefinery sites • D1.5 : Workshop report
