Data Analysis and Visualization with MS Excel CSE 3 Fluency in Information Technology By Matthew Chan Presentation of Information with MS PowerPoint What is the point of CSE 3? Well, CSE 3 prepares us for the basic computational skills that are required in every job and every career. Whether we end up working at a Navy ship or at McDonalds, we end up using computers everywhere. Therefore, it is necessary for all of us to be familiar to the terms and jargon associated with computer science. Computational Thinking With Excel, we were able to create and keep track of our own personal budget. This skill will be useful in the future as I will have to keep track of my own income when I enter the workforce. Keeping track of my budget on Excel is essential in order to save and spend money wisely. In order to understand JAVA Scripting, we first were introduced to Alice. This is a free programing software developed my Carnegie Mellon University. Alice gives instant visual gratification in programming. We instantly saw the results of our drag and drop programming. This prepared us for when we learned JAVA Scripting. Making Information Available to the World with HMTL and Web Pages Visual Programming with Alice Also with Excel, we were able to keep track of our own personal stocks. In the future I will be using Excel. Not only can I keep track of which stocks are growing and diminishing, I can also see where I am gaining profit and where I am loosing profit. Before, I viewed buying stocks as something risky and complicated. However, with Excel, buying stocks is now manageable and easy to keep track of. Building upon our knowledge of XHTML and Alice, we learned how to use JAVA Scripting in order to have user interactions in our websites. For example, we created a website in which it asked a series of questions, and depending on our answers, we would get a unique response. In another lab, we created a menu in which it calculated the costs of the orders that were being made In one lab, we learned how to display our research and findings on a PowerPoint Presentation. For example, we learned how to copy and paste our graphs from our Stocks Excel file and insert them into a fancy PowerPoint Slide. In one of our homework assignments, we created our own calendar for October. Using Notepad ++ and XHTML, we created a calendar with a caption, rows, and columns. This was achieved using the <table> tag function in XHTML. Dynamic Webpage Programming with Java Script Desktop Publishing with MS Word In our first lab of the class, we created our own personal webpage and uploaded that webpage online for the entire world to see. With the use of Notepad ++, we were able to create and design our own websites. With this skill we can create our own online resumes for when we apply for internships and jobs. In this lab, we learned how to create a Word document. We learned how to use headers, insert images, insert captions, insert a table of contents, and insert a bibliography. We then were taught how to post our Word file online for anybody in the world to download and see for themselves. This can be useful for when we publish our own resumes or publications online.
