Signs and Symptoms • Early signs of Schizophrenia • Social withdrawal • Hostility or suspiciousness • Deterioration of personal hygiene • Flat, expressionless gaze • Inability to cry or express joy • Inappropriate laughter or crying • Depression • Oversleeping or insomnia • Odd or irrational statements • Forgetful; unable to concentrate • Extreme reaction to criticism • Strange use of words or way of speaking
Causes of illness/predisposing Factors • Schizophrenia is passed sown through genes, it is up to that person if the gene will develop or not • -Some events trigger the schizophrenia gene for people who are at risk • -You are more likely to develop schizophrenia if you have a family member with the disease • -If schizophrenia is in your parents or sibling you have a 10% chance to develop it • -Some environmental factors can trigger the schizophrenia gene • -Stress can also trigger the gene as the high levels of stress during pregnancy have been studied to be a big trigger for this disease
Who does it affect? • Schizophrenia affects both the person with schizophrenia and those who come in contact with that person. People with schizophrenia often become involved with drugs and alcohol which has a negative affect on them. They can also do irrational things which can often lead to getting themselves and people around them hurt.
Treatments • Some available medications for schizophrenia are : • chlorpromazine (Thorazine), clozapine (Clozaril), haloperidol (Haldol), risperidone(Risperdal), olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine(Seroquel), aripiprazole(Abilify). • These are antipsychotic medications and they reduce the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia. They help people with schizophrenia function more appropriately and effectively . They are not a cure but they ensure that there are no longer any psychotic breakouts.
