18th ANNIVERSARY SERIES: GOING BACK TO OUR ROOTS TO UNDERSTAND OUR PRESENT MINISTRY AS WE CHART OUR FUTURE COURSE I. LET’S BEGIN WITH OUR STORY II. INTRODUCTION: THE NEED TO RETURN TO THE ANCIENT PATHS What Is Pragmatism?
Ministering In An Age Of Itching Ears The market-driven ministry philosophy caters to people whose first love is themselves and who care not for God – unless they can have Him without disrupting their selfish lifestyles. Paul foresaw such a time. ~ 2Tim 4:2-4
Clearly there was no room in Paul’s philosophy of ministry for the give-people-what-they-want theory that is so prevalent today. ~ He commanded Timothy to preach the Word – faithfully, systematically, reprovingly, patiently – and let it confront the spirit of the age head-on.
III. BIBLICAL BASIS FOR THE ANCIENT PATHS Read Jer 6:16. The Context of Jeremiah Jeremiah’s message in this book, especially in chapters 2-45, was of doom directed mostly to his own people in Judah. ~ This chosen nation had not entirely abandoned God.
~ Only, THEY WERE DOING IT THEIR WAY, NOT GOD’S WAY. Jeremiah indicts the nation for disobedience to the Law of Moses and he warned them against a false confidence in the covenant the nation had with God. ~ Jeremiah therefore admonishes them to return to the ancient paths of biblical doctrine, worship and daily living.
Specifically, what Jeremiah means by going back to the ancient paths includes the following: a) Acknowledgment of Yahweh as Israel’s only sovereign Lord (2:13, 16:10-12) b) Faithfulness to their covenant established by God with Israel through Moses at Mt Sinai (11:1-13)
c) Glad acceptance of the law (6:10,19; 9:13) d) A godly conduct and attitude that was more important than rituals and sacrifices (i.e., repentance, reconciliation, fear, and love of God, 7:1-11,22-23)
Application We all know that this call to return to the ancient paths is just as relevant to the church today as it was thousands of years ago when Jeremiah addressed it to Judah. ~ The church today has in general departed from the ancient paths by having a philosophy in life and ministry that is directed by something else other than the Bible.
The New Paradigm is an approach that distorts the gospel and supporting it is to share in an evil work and to fall under the condemnation Paul wrote in Gal 1:8-9. But the new Paradigm is only one of the departures we see in the churches in our country today. ~ There are present circumstances that have made it urgent for us to steer our way back to the ancient paths.
We can expect that in these last days, there will be more departures from the faith that will occur. ~ 2Tim 4:3-4 The church should go back to the ancient paths because God will only honor this old yet tested way.
