  2. Making Waves – What? Making Waves is a program on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, to replace poverty and unemployment with financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

  3. The Making Waves program targets: • Schools • Community Organizations • Businesses • Governments • Residents – especially Youth

  4. Making Waves – What? Objective 1: 90 teachers in grades K-12 integrate financial literacy and entrepreneurship lessons into their schools and classrooms. Results: Over 60 teachers are already utilizing our toolkit and 30 more will receive toolkits this summer.

  5. Making Waves – What? Objective 2:Community organizations change 4 policies or practices on the Reservation that expand financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Results: Payroll deductions Predatory Lending Organizational Market Employer sponsored saving

  6. Making Waves – Why? • Research reports recommend: • Integrate financial literacy and entrepreneurship into K-12 education • Support financial literacy and entrepreneurship in communities

  7. The Making Waves ABCs Financial Literacy ABCs Assess Spending • Build Credit • Create Assets Entrepreneurship ABCs • Assess Options • Build Experience • Create Markets

  8. The Making Waves ABCs encourage people to Become better stewards of money, expanding assets rather than debts.

  9. Community Campaign 1: Make Money Matter In the Schools Financial Literacy Education Teacher Toolkits Results: 60 teachers, 750 children impacted.

  10. Community Campaign 1: Make Money Matter In the Homes Financial Literacy Education, Public Education Campaign Results: 225 Financial Literacy graduates, Campaign has reached every household.

  11. Community Campaign 1: Make Money Matter In the Communities Individual Development Account Campaign Promotion Results: Over 100 IDA participants, campaign saturation in businesses and organizations.

  12. The Making Waves ABCs encourage people to Build and support private businesses.

  13. Community Campaign 2: Shop Cheyenne River In the Schools Entrepreneurship Education Teacher Toolkits Youth Entrepreneurship Fair Results: All Reservation teachers and students impacted.

  14. Community Campaign 2: Shop Cheyenne River In the Homes Shop Local, Market Surveys Results: Robust Shop Local Campaign, Market Opportunity study completed.

  15. Community Campaign 2: Shop Cheyenne River In the Communities Youth Internships Entrepreneurship Fair Results: Over 45 youth interns, annual Entrepreneurship Fair

  16. Wavemaker Pledge Cards Local residents and community partners select actions they will take to support the Make Money Matter and Shop Local campaigns. Results: Over 200 pledge cards signed.

  17. Making Waves gains Tribe’s Support In January 2008, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe adopted a Resolution embracing the Making Waves program and challenging Four Bands to start a wave of financial literacy and entrepreneurship that lifts our communities out of poverty and unemployment.

  18. Be aWavemaker– a role model for positive change! Step 1: Learn the Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship ABCs. Step 2: Sign the Wavemaker Pledge Card. Step 3: Implement the ABCs into your life. Step 4: Become a Wavemaker – a role model for positive change in your community.

  19. Lessons Learned: The approach must be comprehensive. It’s important to start young! Identify partners and bring them on board. Pilot projects before going full scale. Continue follow up evaluations with youth as they grow.
