  1. Invention of the PC By: Ally DelGuidice-Bove

  2. Basic Introduction • . Back in the 1970s, some individuals could buy unassembled PCs and program them in their spare time, but these early computers could not perform most of the beneficial tasks that computers today can. • The PC’s today are utilized for a wide range of purposes from editing photos, managing budgets, and even basic word processing.

  3. First Computers • ENIACtheElectronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer & Computer • Originally built to do ballistics calculations for the US military during World War II.

  4. ENIAC • The cost—$500,000 • Weight—30 tons • On the outsideit had thousands of blinking lights, close to 6,000 switches and covered in cables • On the insidethere were vacuum tubes that carried electrical signals from one part of the machine to the other

  5. Transistor • An electronic device that carried and amplified electrical current but was much smaller than the vacuum tubes inside the ENIAC. • These new computers were taking only 30 seconds to complete tasks that too a team of people 12 hours to complete.

  6. Integrated Circuit • Ten years after the transistor, a team of scientist in Texas, came up with an integrated circuit containing all of the computer’s electrical parts into a single silicon chip.

  7. First Microprocessor • It was developed in 1971 by an engineer at Intel names Ted Hoff. • Intel’s first microprocessor had the same computing power as the massive ENIAC but was only 1/16 by 1/8 of an inch called the 4004.

  8. Microprocessor • This could do all of the things that integrated chips could notthey could run the computer’s programs, remember information, & manage data all by themselves.

  9. “Microcomputer” • Soon known as the “personal computer” • In 1975, a company called MITS—Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems—hired a par of Harvard students named Paul G. Allen, and Bill Gates to adapt the BASIC programming language for a computer kit called the Altair.

  10. Microsoft • This software made the computer easier to use and it became a huge hit. In April of 1975, these two young programmers took the money they made from the “Altair BASIC” and formed a company of their own—Microsoft.

  11. And it started! • The PC revolution had initiated. Soon after, companies such as IBM, Xerox, Tandy and Commodore had entered the market. • Today, laptops, smart phones, and tablet computers permit us to have a PC with us wherever we go. • This is one of the most important revolutions that technology has ever seen.
