Important people • The most famous Algerian was St. Augustine (354–430), a Church father who was born in eastern Numidia. An important 19th-century figure was Abd-el-Kader (1808–1873), emir of Mascara, who led the resistance against the French invaders from 1830 to 1847.

Humans and physical environment • People in Algeria have to have a lot of water to survive. Climate: mild, wet winters with hot, dry summers along coast. Drier with cold winters and hot summers on high plateau.

Culture The national dish of Algeria is couscous, steamed semolina wheat served with lamb or chicken, cooked vegetables, and gravy. Common flavorings include onions, turnips, raisins, and red peppers, as well as salt, and pepper. Religions: Muslim (state religion) 99%, Christian and Jewish 1% Languages: Arabic (official), French, and Berber
