Read B-7 • Copy this challenge question: Which three properties are most useful when identifying an unknown material. Explain why for each. • Copy the vocab: Crystal shape: The general shape of a sample of a mineral (called “crystal habit” by mineralogist). Luster: The ability of a material to reflect light (“shininess”). Property: The nature of a material, such as color, hardness, state, density, luster, etc. Transparent: Ability to let all light pass through an object creating a “clear” appearance (glass). Translucent: Ability to let some light pass through an object creating a “blurred” appearance (stained glass). Opaque: Does not allow any light to pass through (wood). • Glue in student sheet 13.1. • Discuss the following with your partner: • What is a diamond? • Where do diamonds come from? • What else could the earring be made of? • How could you find out if the earrings contain genuine diamonds? • Complete the procedure.
