UDL- Techniques for the Everyday Student By: Lisa Musacchio & Jessica Carmer
There are many ways that students can implement the UDL guidelines into their everyday routines so that they become more efficient and successful learners. The methods covered are only a few that can be used to stay organized, focused, and complete tasks. This is what UDL means to us!!!
When reading the Textbook students can Highlight critical features, big ideas, and relationships. By highlighting key ideas in the text it is easier to study and understand the text later. It is also beneficial to highlight the textbook if you plan on making your own written notes out of the book.
Students have the opportunity to Customize the Display of Information. When creating your own notes its important to color code and customize information. This makes looking for relationships easy and more comprehendible than reading the textbook alone.
Students can also use Assistive Technologies to help remember lectures and classroom conversation Tape recorders are a fairly inexpensive way to keep an accurate recording of important lectures and classroom conversations. This is one of many assistive technologies that a student can choose from.
To become a successful student, you need to Guide Effective Goal Setting This can be achieved by keeping a planner and writing down important due dates. If you prefer the high-tech method there are many smart phones on the market that have planners and calendars built into them so you can set alarms and notices ect.
Students should try to Reduce Threats and Distractions This can easily be achieved by going to the library to study previously learned information. The library is a great place to go to reduce threats and distractions because they have a quiet floor meant for getting school work done. They also have information for finding tutors if a student is struggling in a certain subject
Students should always work together with classmates and peers to Foster Collaboration and Communication. Working together either over the internet via email, or in person, is a great way to collectively discuss ideas and future plans. When working with others more can be accomplished at once. Peers also help us think through creative ideas to create a cohesive project.
By using some of the previous methods covered, students will be able to accomplish difficult goals, manage their busy schedules and collaborate with peers. All of this, just by using the UDL Guidelines.
