UDL -Universal Design for Learning
KWL on UDL KNOW WANT to know LEARNED -creatively based; wide opportunity, allows for choice -utilizes video/audio -has to do with student learning -universal design for learning -the actual def., and implementation -effective use -why is it beneficial -UDL is first about accessibility -its about differentiation -it uses new media, but can be adapted if access is an issue -3 principles -history of udl (uda) was important -a difference between access to info and access to learning -mostly student centered
UDA? • Universal design in Architecture
UDL • Utilizing new media to create a flexible framework for instruction. • 3 principles • 1. Present information in multiple formats. • 2. Provide multiple pathways for student action and expression • 3. Provide multiple ways to engage student interest and motivation
How does this framework allow for access? Hmmmm… Yodeling • 1. Flexible delivery • 2. Inclusive for multiple learners • 3. Time to engage with material UDLing
But don’t just take MY word for it… • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSHflViWRCQ
Observe and critique • https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/reading-like-a-historian-sourcing REMEMBER: • 1. Present information in multiple formats. • 2. Provide multiple pathways for student action and expression • 3. Provide multiple ways to engage student interest and motivation
+’s = good things∆ = changes + ∆ Technology could be used more effectively (interactive) Change from a text base lesson to a more media rich approach (video clips, political platforms) Use more than one source Assign perspectives, possible debate Tie lesson to political positions or government positions Allow for differentiation by interest • Smart board use • Map visual • No specific answer to question posed; students formed opinions • Direct instruction and small groups used • Multiple perspectives
Your turn.. • 1. observe at least two samples of instruction (video, lesson plan, etc.) • 2. Critique in terms of UDL • 3. Prepare to share +’s and delta’s
